Becoming A Referee

Details and Requirements to Referee

  • You must be two years older than the age of the teams playing to center, you can do lines for players older than you
  • No experience necessary
  • Register and pay your USSF (US Soccer Federation) Fees
  • Take the necessary hours of instruction through Cal South (Online modules and field instruction)

We are advising everyone to become a Grade 8 referee. Grade 8 permits you to referee both competitive and recreational matches and will give you more confidence on the field.

friedmanMark Friedman runs the Sharks referee program. Mark has been a referee for many years and contributes many hours and days each year to make our referee program a success. If you want to become a USSF soccer referee follow the three steps on the left side of this page to become a Grade 8 referee.  Do not worry about the “Grade” word it does not correspond to the grade in school; it is only a referee level.

Doug has been involved with the Sharks soccer league for almost twenty years holding various positions including coach, division coordinator, VP of Rec and referee assignor.
